Day 36: Taupo–>Tongariro National Park

We got up first thing this morn to head out on a walk to Huka Falls. We were originally considering a skydive but the weather was not permitting. On our way we got lured into a local market for some nommy bites.

It was about a one hour walk on a really pretty back road to the falls. For once Google maps was actually pretty accurate in its estimated walking time which put us a little behind schedule.

The falls were actually more like very narrow high speed rapids but super picturesque nonetheless.

We looked at the time and decided it might be time to test the infamous NZ hitchhiking scene to guarantee that we made our bus. Luckily we were able to get a ride with a really nice mother, daughter, and labradoodle into town from the parking lot. Hitchhiking is pretty commonplace here among tourists since Kiwis are so friendly.

Spent the afternoon on a scenic bus ride to Tongariro National Park. The park is characterized by three iconic mountains, one being Mount Doom from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
